Muscle building supplements & weight loss meal plans to help you achieve your fitness goals
Today I want to talk about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) because this is turning into a big problem.
So much so that it affects an estimated 25% of the population.
So rather your an athlete, gym rat, or just a regular old Joe.
Fatty liver is very mush real and dangerous if not taken care of properly!
There’s also alcoholic liver disease (ALD) which is caused by consuming too much alcohol.
But people with NAFLD do not consume any or very little alcohol.
But, they do consume a large amount of certain types of food and I’ll tell you about that in a minute.
Both NAFLD and ALD will cause scarring of your liver and can lead to cirrhosis… which can lead to liver cancer or failure.
Just remember that your liver is extremely important to your health – both how you look and feel, your immune system, mind and hundreds of other important daily functions.
So just because you’re not drinking alcohol or taking liver toxic pills, does NOT mean that you have a healthy liver.
So, why is this or should this be important to you?
In many cases of non alcoholic fatty liver disease, there are no noticeable symptoms.
Swelling in your belly or pain in your upper right side of your abdomen, would cause concern.
So would fatigue.
And of course, an enlarged liver, which would need a doctor’s exam.
Thus, by the time you think or feel you have non alcoholic fatty liver disease, there’s been too much damage to the liver.
Remember, we want to be proactive.
Reversing liver damage is possible, but it’s a lot more work.
Now SOME people who have belly fat, especially the harmful, visceral belly fat.
The kind that’s inside your organs and causes your stomach to pop out, like a “beer belly” or a pregnant look?
These people tend to have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
No clinical proof for this that i know of though but it’s wort noting and although it’s no clinical proof for this.
A lot of belly fat is STILL dangerous!
So the point here is that it’s tough tell.
Doing a liver tests does not necessarily tell you that you have NAFLD.
The elevated liver enzymes such as ALT and AST could be caused because of tension, exercise, muscle tissue breakdown, taking medications etc.
Not necessarily related to the non-alcoholic fatty liver illness
Studies have linked insulin resistance to be the strongest risk factor in having NAFLD.
People who are most likely to develop insulin resistance include people who are overweight and/or lead a sedentary lifestyle (don’t move or exercise much).
Your primary goal is that you must improve your insulin sensitivity and thus, have lower blood sugar levels.
Which means that you need to improve your lifestyle… eat better and move more.
If you’re overweight, you need to slowly lose weight.
Again, eat better and exercise.
The more muscle you have and the lower your body fat, the better your insulin sensitivity.
I know this is basic stuff for most of us — eat better and exercise more, but sadly – most people just don’t do it.
However, the main goal here is to improve your blood sugar levels.
This means to remove all sugars, including fruit.
Do NOT drink any of your calories – no alcohol, no soda, no fruit juice and so forth.
Only water, tea and small amounts of black coffee.
And there are two very important supplements I suggest you start taking.
The first is Choline & Inositol.
These are B-Vitamins.
